Women's leather jackets are one of the most long-lasting wardrobe investments — a quality genuine leather jacket lasts 10–20 years with proper care and becomes more beautiful over time, acquiring a unique patina. Roberto Fashion offers a collection of biker, bomber, classic straight, and cropped styles from our own Roberto&Co line (with the option for custom tailoring at our atelier in Velingrad) and from established brands like LaBalancia, VIPART, and Merkur. All models are made from genuine leather — lamb, cow, or goat — of Italian origin and professionally tanned. We offer sizes from XS to 2XL and extended options for our Plus Size line. Our team helps with jacket selection, considering your figure, style, and price range.
Biker jackets (moto jackets) are the most iconic style — asymmetrical zipper, lapels, waist belt, and often additional zippers on the sleeves. They originated from 1920s motorcycle gear and are a fashion statement today. They work equally well with jeans and casual dresses, as well as with midi skirts for a more fashion-forward contrast. Bomber leather jackets have a short, fitted cut, elasticated hem, and elasticated cuffs. Their origin is from American military aviation — hence the short name. Today, they are one of the most versatile casual styles. Classic straight leather jackets reach mid-hip, without elastic, with a central zipper or buttons. The most timeless choice — works for both work and evening. Cropped leather jackets are shortened to above the waist — a modern silhouette, ideal for heights under 170 cm, as it visually elongates the legs. Blazer-style leather jackets have a blazer cut with lapels and buttons — the smartest option, suitable for office and business casual. Maxi / long leather jackets (to the knee or below) are a powerful fashion choice, working best over skinny pants or a midi dress.
This is the most important question when buying a leather jacket online. In the BG market, eco leather jackets are often presented as genuine, at prices between €60 and €120. A real leather jacket made of quality leather does not cost less than €150 — this is the physical reality of the material. Here's how to tell the difference:
Smell — the most reliable indicator. Genuine leather smells like leather (a characteristic light, "organic" scent). Eco leather smells like plastic, vinyl, or chemicals. When delivered to the store, smell the jacket before accepting it.
Pattern — genuine leather has an uneven, unique pattern. Eco leather is perfectly uniform — machine-made. Look closely at the surface in good light; if all "pores" are evenly spaced in a perfect pattern — it's eco.
Weight — leather is a dense natural material. A bomber jacket made of genuine leather weighs 1.5–2.5 kg. The same jacket made of eco leather weighs 0.8–1.3 kg. The significant difference is immediately noticeable.
Texture of the cut edge — look at the edge of the seam from the inside. Genuine leather has fibers and structural density. Eco leather has a textile base under the plastic coating — clearly visible.
Price — if a price under €120 promises "100% genuine leather" — check carefully. The production cost of a small leather jacket made of quality leather is about €80–100, so a retail price under €150 is not physically possible for a quality product.
Certificates — quality manufacturers provide a certificate of origin for the leather (usually an Italian Tannery certificate or Leather Working Group — LWG).
Not all genuine leather is the same. The type of leather determines softness, durability, price, and suitable style:
Lamb leather — the softest and most luxurious. Very soft to the touch, fine and light, ideal for women's modern jackets. More delicate — stretches more and requires more careful care. Often used in premium biker and bomber jackets.
Cow leather — the most common. Thicker and more durable than lamb, with a distinct grain. Ideal for classic and biker jackets that will be worn daily. The best balance between price and quality.
Goat leather — thicker than lamb, but softer than cow. Very characteristic pattern with natural mesh lines. A good option for casual biker styles.
Nappa leather — a processing method (not a separate type of leather) — usually from lamb or calf, tanned to extreme softness and smoothness. Premium segment.
Suede — the underside of the leather, soft to the touch like velvet. More decorative than functional — it doesn't like rain and gets dirty more easily. An excellent choice for bohemian and fashion styles.
Nubuck — similar to suede, but processed from the outer side of the leather. More durable than suede with a similar velvety feel.
Leather thickness is the second critical factor: 0.8–1.0 mm is standard women's leather (soft, light); 1.0–1.2 mm is more durable, for biker and work styles; 1.2 mm+ is professional moto leather, rare in fashion jackets.
For everyday and casual — a biker or bomber jacket in classic black, brown, or light brown. Works with women's jeans, a T-shirt, and sneakers. Trend colors: oxblood, cognac, olive.
For office and business casual — a blazer-style leather jacket in a neutral color (black, dark gray, dark brown) over a women's shirt and straight trousers. Avoid biker and bomber in a conservative environment — too casual.
For evening and cocktail — a fitted leather jacket over a midi women's dress or cocktail dress — the contrast between soft fabric and edgy leather is one of the most stylish fashion moments. Complete with high heels.
For spring and autumn — leather jackets are perfect for a temperature range of 10°C to 20°C. For cooler weather — wear with a knitted sweater or cashmere jumper; for warmer weather — with a fine knit top or light shirt. For winter months, combine with a women's coat over a leather jacket as a double layer.
Our atelier in Velingrad sews custom-made women's leather jackets with Italian leather to customer order. This is a unique service in the Bulgarian fashion market — all large online stores sell ready-made models in standard sizes. Custom tailoring solves three common problems: non-standard proportions (e.g., long arms for average height, wider shoulders than bust circumference), specific style (the customer wants a particular cut not in the current collection), and Plus Size perfect fit (standard size charts often don't work for curvier figures). The process takes 3–5 weeks and includes two fittings. Contact us for a consultation and budget assessment — prices start from €350 for a cropped lamb leather model.
Leather stretches 5–7% over time, especially for biker and fitted styles. This changes the approach to sizing: choose a size that is snug when purchased, not comfortably loose. If the jacket is comfortably loose on day 1, after 20 wears it will be too big. Measure your chest circumference, shoulder width (very important for a leather jacket — the structure is determined by the shoulder seam), and sleeve length. Compare with the size chart. If you fall between two sizes — choose the smaller one. Exceptions: oversize styles (moto drop-shoulder) and cropped blazer-style — where a standard fit is appropriate.
Realistic price ranges for the Bulgarian market:
A price under €150 for "genuine leather" — extremely suspicious. Most often it is bonded leather (glued leather fibers with polymer) or mislabeled eco leather.
In addition to leather quality, check construction:
Stitching — even spacing, no skips, no loose threads. The standard is 8–10 stitches per inch.
Zippers — YKK, Riri, or SBS are the industry standards. Ask for information on which brand is used. Cheap unbranded zippers jam within the first few months.
Lining — quality jackets have a textile or satin lining, not exposed raw leather. Watch out for rough seams on the inside.
Buttons and details — metal, solid, not plastic imitations. Leather jackets with plastic details are an indicator of compromise.
Hang on sturdy hangers with padded shoulders — never on wire or thin hangers that leave marks. Avoid direct sunlight — leather fades and cracks. During summer months, when the jacket is not worn, cover with a breathable bag (not plastic — it needs air). In the wardrobe, leave space around the jacket — leather pressed against other clothes with sharp seams develops permanent deformations. Every 6 months, treat with professional leather conditioner — it preserves elasticity and prevents cracking.
| Leather Type | Origin | Softness | Durability | Typical Jackets | Typical Price |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Lamb | Lambs | Very soft | Medium | Premium biker, bomber | €300–600 |
| Cow | Adult cattle | Medium | High | Classic, everyday biker | €200–450 |
| Goat | Goats | Soft | High | Casual biker, bomber | €220–400 |
| Nappa (process) | Usually lamb/calf | Extremely soft | Medium | Premium fashion jackets | €400–800 |
| Suede | Various | Velvety | Low (sensitive) | Bohemian, fashion-forward | €200–400 |
| Nubuck | Usually cow | Velvety, stronger | Medium-high | Casual fashion | €220–420 |
| Split leather | Second layer of leather | Variable | Lower | Entry-level | €150–250 |
Proper care determines whether the jacket will last 5 years or 20. The basic rules:
Never wash a leather jacket in a washing machine or by hand. Water destroys the natural oils in the leather, making it brittle. The only exception is "washable leather" — a special treatment explicitly noted by the manufacturer.
Cleaning — for minor stains, wipe with a slightly damp cloth and a specialized leather cleaner (not regular soap). For serious stains or dirt after rain — take it to a dry cleaner specializing in leather (not all dry cleaners do).
Nourishing the leather — every 6 months, treat with a leather conditioner or specialized cream. This is especially important during the heating season — dry air in heated rooms dries out the leather. Apply a small amount with a soft cloth, wait 20 minutes, then wipe off any excess.
If wet from rain — never dry near a radiator or in direct sunlight. Place on a hanger at room temperature and allow it to air dry naturally for 12–24 hours. After it is completely dry, apply leather conditioner to restore the oils.
Long-term storage — if not used for more than 3 months (e.g., during summer), clean the jacket, treat it with conditioner, cover it with a breathable bag, and hang it in a well-ventilated area.
