This is the most important question when buying a leather jacket online. In the BG market, eco leather jackets are often presented as genuine, at prices between €60 and €120. A real leather jacket made of quality leather does not cost less than €150 — this is the physical reality of the material. Here's how to tell the difference:

Smell — the most reliable indicator. Genuine leather smells like leather (a characteristic light, "organic" scent). Eco leather smells like plastic, vinyl, or chemicals. When delivered to the store, smell the jacket before accepting it.

Pattern — genuine leather has an uneven, unique pattern. Eco leather is perfectly uniform — machine-made. Look closely at the surface in good light; if all "pores" are evenly spaced in a perfect pattern — it's eco.

Weight — leather is a dense natural material. A bomber jacket made of genuine leather weighs 1.5–2.5 kg. The same jacket made of eco leather weighs 0.8–1.3 kg. The significant difference is immediately noticeable.

Texture of the cut edge — look at the edge of the seam from the inside. Genuine leather has fibers and structural density. Eco leather has a textile base under the plastic coating — clearly visible.

Price — if a price under €120 promises "100% genuine leather" — check carefully. The production cost of a small leather jacket made of quality leather is about €80–100, so a retail price under €150 is not physically possible for a quality product.

Certificates — quality manufacturers provide a certificate of origin for the leather (usually an Italian Tannery certificate or Leather Working Group — LWG).

How to choose the right size?

Leather stretches 5–7% over time, especially for biker and fitted styles. This changes the approach to sizing: choose a size that is snug when purchased, not comfortably loose. If the jacket is comfortably loose on day 1, after 20 wears it will be too big. Measure your chest circumference, shoulder width (very important for a leather jacket — the structure is determined by the shoulder seam), and sleeve length. Compare with the size chart. If you fall between two sizes — choose the smaller one. Exceptions: oversize styles (moto drop-shoulder) and cropped blazer-style — where a standard fit is appropriate.

A price under €150 for "genuine leather" — extremely suspicious. Most often it is bonded leather (glued leather fibers with polymer) or mislabeled eco leather.

How to recognize a well-made jacket?

In addition to leather quality, check construction:

Stitching — even spacing, no skips, no loose threads. The standard is 8–10 stitches per inch.

Zippers — YKK, Riri, or SBS are the industry standards. Ask for information on which brand is used. Cheap unbranded zippers jam within the first few months.

Lining — quality jackets have a textile or satin lining, not exposed raw leather. Watch out for rough seams on the inside.

Buttons and details — metal, solid, not plastic imitations. Leather jackets with plastic details are an indicator of compromise.

How to store a leather jacket?

Hang on sturdy hangers with padded shoulders — never on wire or thin hangers that leave marks. Avoid direct sunlight — leather fades and cracks. During summer months, when the jacket is not worn, cover with a breathable bag (not plastic — it needs air). In the wardrobe, leave space around the jacket — leather pressed against other clothes with sharp seams develops permanent deformations. Never wash a leather jacket in a washing machine or by hand. Water destroys the natural oils in the leather, making it brittle. The only exception is "washable leather" — a special treatment explicitly noted by the manufacturer.

Cleaning — for minor stains, wipe with a slightly damp cloth and a specialized leather cleaner (not regular soap). For serious stains or dirt after rain — take it to a dry cleaner specializing in leather (not all dry cleaners do).

Nourishing the leather — every 6 months, treat with a leather conditioner or specialized cream. This is especially important during the heating season — dry air in heated rooms dries out the leather. Apply a small amount with a soft cloth, wait 20 minutes, then wipe off any excess.

If wet from rain — never dry near a radiator or in direct sunlight. Place on a hanger at room temperature and allow it to air dry naturally for 12–24 hours. After it is completely dry, apply leather conditioner to restore the oils.

Long-term storage — if not used for more than 3 months (e.g., during summer), clean the jacket, treat it with conditioner, cover it with a breathable bag, and hang it in a well-ventilated area.
